Waterfall House
Located in Glen Iris’ Summerhill Estate – an area renowned for its consistent interwar brick dwellings – Waterfall House is a joyful celebration of 1930s art deco design. Tasked with transforming an inward-facing, two-bedroom residence into a spacious and light-filled family home, Clare Cousins Architects sought to embrace the property’s original quirks and character while adapting its period features for contemporary living.
To achieve this delicate balance, the design team drew inspiration from the sculptural curves of the original entry portico, seamlessly echoing these sweeping forms in the new two-storey extension. Materiality played a crucial role in bridging the gap between the old and the new. The robust, natural palette is beautifully anchored by our Krause 76mm Pressed Creams, chosen specifically for their ability to reference the surrounding heritage homes while retaining a distinct, tactile character of their own.

The meticulous detailing allows the tactile cream masonry to form sinuous curves and beautiful cut-brick balconies that effortlessly wrap the home’s contemporary additions. Paired with warm Spotted Gum timber and sweeping curved glass, our handmade bricks help create a grounded, inviting sanctuary that perfectly honours its art deco heritage.
