The home of SJB Architects Director Adam Haddow is the personification of ‘less is more’. Situated amongst the warehouses and sprawling terraces of Sydney’s beautiful Surry Hills, the three-storey home – while grand in its appearance, has a footprint of just 30 square metres.
Designed by the SJB Director himself, this project was born from the notion of Adam, husband Michael (and their dog Eric) of wanting to live smaller and simpler, without sacrificing anything. The couple’s home does just that, with sustainable practices in mind. Observing the project’s exterior, repurposed Krause Bricks are used to create windows and recesses of all shapes and sizes, bringing playfulness to the street corner.
“Architects do houses like this as prototypes to try and find a solution. It’s looking at how do we try and solve the density challenge in Sydney.”
Entering off the streets of Surry Hills into this deceiving dwelling means stepping into a considered and inviting space, one that feels calm and spacious, despite the residence boasting just two bathrooms and 1.5 bedrooms total at 69 square metres total.
