The Bendigo Law Courts project represents a profound shift in civic architecture, delivering a justice facility that is accessible, culturally sensitive, and deeply connected to its community. Moving away from the imposing, traditional courtrooms of the past, this landmark project centres on inclusivity. The design prioritises safe, calming spaces – including a dedicated Koori Court and specialised facilities for vulnerable persons – shaped by extensive consultation with the Dja Dja Wurrung Traditional Owners.
To achieve an exterior that feels both monumental and inviting, thoughtful materiality was paramount. Wardle utilised our custom Krause Bricks in ‘Terra Firma’ to craft a highly textural facade of incredible depth and permanence. The bespoke masonry brilliantly grounds the expansive structure while beautifully echoing the rich, warm tones of the striking copper detailing above.

The tactile, earthy qualities of the ‘Terra Firma’ bricks seamlessly connect the building to the region’s natural landscape. Paired with culturally significant artworks and paving that symbolises a smoking ceremony, the bespoke brickwork helps cultivate an environment of calm, setting a new, compassionate benchmark for justice architecture.
