With its striking brick podium and contemporary office tower, 271 Spring Street has set a new benchmark for integrating with, and complementing, a site that’s rich in heritage value. Designed by the formidable team of John Wardle Architects, this 16-storey boutique office building, including modern office and function spaces and a roof terrace, is now the headquarters for Australian Unity.
Commissioned by the City of Boroondara, the new facility is home to the Balwyn Park Tennis Club, Balwyn Tigers Football Club, University of the Third Age and other community interest groups. The facility combines many varied uses in its small footprint: clubroom, multipurpose teaching and learning spaces, a commercial kitchen, offices and the all-important trophy and display cabinets.
Below the athletic roof form, muscular and poised, the textured brick walls are punctuated with ample windows, lending views inward and outward toward the unfolding match. Inside, circulation revolves around a central stair, articulated with seating and a court-inspired enclosure. Although brick is the hero, interiors are announced with a splash of colour, reminiscent of red leather and fresh turf.
